How to Create a Bright Future

by Siimon 23. March 2010 12:23

Yesterday I read a quote that made a huge impact on me.

It was from Charlie Chaplin, surely one of the greatest entertainers in history.

Here it is:  "You have to believe in yourself. That’s the secret. Even when I was in the orphanage, when I was roaming the street
trying to find enough to eat, even then I thought of myself as the greatest actor in the world."

The reason it struck me so powerfully was that it made me wonder whether I was seeing myself as I am now, or as I want to be.

Throughout the last 1000 years, great people have given similar advice, from the Persian poet Rumi to Henry Ford: we must behave
as if we already are the person we want to become. We must act like we are, before we truly are.

It's tough to do, because it demands an act of blind faith. And even arrogance.

Yet the frequency with which outstanding achievers throughout history have offered the same counsel, makes me certain that it's a
more effective strategy for success than being 'humble', and downplaying our strengths to ourselves. And others.

We cannot create a brilliant future by seeing ourselves only in the present.

If your mind is the clay of your future, what are you creating with it?

You're quite right about the mind being "the clay of your future". I've just recently started repeating to myself over and over "I am great, I am full of self confidence, I will be a success" as I go to sleep. After about a week I am now seeing myself speak with more confidence and become more of a people person, it's great! Ahhh the mind, a truly remarkable piece of machinery.

I think that this is a fantastic exercise. If I could just make one suggestion which would be to change 'I will be a success' to 'I am a success' so that it is not something in the future but now.

Great article!  When I was younger I used to want to visit pubs and nightclubs despite the fact I was not of legal age. When I approached the bouncers who were placed on the door to keep underage people like myself out I always used to think "it's my god given right to be inside there." I believed this with every fibre of my being and almost everytime it worked, the bouncers would never challenge me. Power of the mind, eh!

very powerful principle indeed and one I recommend 100%!

However, when combined with little social intuition this can be very DANGEROUS to your reputability.

Almost everyday I see people with no idea about business running around forums or whatever proclaiming their big ambitions and acting as if they've already achieved it when in fact they're clearly a beginner.

When I see this happening I almost always get an annoyed feeling of 'oh no not another newbie straight outta a motivational seminar...'

I'm not one to talk because only a few years ago, I myself WAS this idiot with no clue about what the hell I was doing but acting successful anyway and announcing my goals to world!

I can only imagine how much of a tool I looked to serious business people - BUT THE POINT IS: it helped me get to where I am today... now I have SOME clue about business haha

A few months ago I met a very successful entrepreneur in his late 30's and he told me the most profound insight I've EVER heard!! Paraphrased it was something like "the more I learn, the more I realize how LITTLE I actually know".

Up until then I thought I 'got' business and was quite arrogant in that regard. That insight certainly humbled me and put me on a better path that's for sure.

The bottom line: even when acting like your ALREADY successful (and even when you ARE successful) remember to always keep learning.

I knew Siimon was a life long learner, but seeing him actually tweet "Doing 20 minutes marketing study. ( Got to keep learning!)" reinforced that belief.

Looking back I myself am a little confused as to what hell it is I'm talking about here, so if you can find some sense in it then congrats!

As always siimon learning from you, wait till your kitten really starts communicating with you its like having a baby.
You probably know this, but cats are guardians of the psyhic realm they sense things we do not even understand, they absorb neg vibes from the atmosphere, they actually guard your home , watch one day your kitten will be in guard mode at the front door, thats when you know you have a friend for life, lovely adorable felines meow lol !!!!!
Give them lots of affection they need it and they will be purrrrrring jx
