Making the Ordinary into Extraordinary

by Siimon 9. April 2010 11:48

I've just come back from Dubai as guest of Sheikh Maktoum.

As you can imagine, with such a generous host, I experienced some magnificent moments.

But one of the most interesting occurred in my hotel room at the plush Madinet Jumeirah Resort.

Returning one evening, I noticed that sitting on my bed was a little booklet entitled 'Herbal Pillows'.

Opening it up, I discovered this hotel was offering me no less than 9 different kinds of pillows!

The Hangover Pillow, with a blend of juniper, mustard and peppermint inside it, used by traditional healers to reduce headaches.

The Tranquillity Pillow, with chamomile, ginger and spearmint.

There were Love Pillows, Dream Pillows, and Energy Pillows. And Meditation, Stress, Eye, and even Sun Sign pillows.

Now isn't that an amazing thing, I thought.

I am in one of the most expensive, opulent and spectacular hotels on the planet.

Yet one of the most impressive parts of this palace is a tiny booklet, promising me an extraordinary range of pillows.

It cost them hardly any money at all to create this unique service.

But it sets them apart from almost every other luxury hotel in the world.

Surely we all could come up with something like this for our own businesses. Something relatively cheap, but surprising, delightful and memorable.

What could be your equivalent of this Dubai hotel's pillow menu?

Sleep on it.

I actually thought this was a fantastic idea, and it's just the typical 'outside the box' thinking that I admire. One it's cheap, two it's a unique idea and three because it gets people talking (and blogging) about the little extras that the hotel provides to their guests. I know if I could afford it I'd stay there just for the pillows lol, but mind you I'm into that sort of new age, hippy stuff Smile

I'm halfway through your book. It is brilliant. No waffle. No hype. Just really powerful insight and incredibly practical advice on top performance put concisely.

Thank you.

I would like to congratulate the author for writing such a wonderful blog. I never had any idea about the different kinds of pillows. I think that it is really a good idea to attracting guests. It also goes a long way in providing the customer the much needed comfort. I would like to thank the author for sharing such wonderful information. I hope that he will continue the good work in future also. I wish him all the best.

I have just started an online booking system for waste services (Skip Bin Hire is the first cab off the rank so to speak) and I will work on this suggestion as part of my to-do list.  Find something relatively cheap, but surprising, delightful and memorable. This might be a small challenge when trying to find something delightful that is waste related but I am sure it will make my business standout!

I'm still talking about our Experience Manager in the Faena Universe in Buenos Aires. We were given a phone to call him, at any time and for any reason. Impeccable service. Fresh roses, macaroons in our room daily. Boutique establishments understand that with hotels the big thing are the little things. This place has to be seen to be believed just like Dubai. Excellent post.
