The Importance Of Play

by Siimon 8. June 2010 13:12

I'm currently receiving instructions on how to live a great life.

Not from a philosopher, a self-help guru or shrink, but from our new kitten, who arrived 3 days ago.

I've been amazed at how this little furry one takes the time to play around throughout the day.

He's not unusual. Almost all of the creatures in the animal kingdom are the same.

It got me thinking, is play not a natural state for humans?

Well I think that it's reasonable to assume it is, simply because as children our attitude is highly playful.

Only as we get conditioned by the heaviness of modern daily life, does our playful mode of thought diminish.

There seems to be a collective belief amongst adults that being playful means that we are not serious about our work.

Yet I've seen no research that shows that being playful reduces work effectiveness. To the contrary, I've seen several books that show persuasively that it improves it.

And every so often, we all meet an executive who performs superbly, yet remains light, fun and happy.

These people inevitably become linchpins in society, centres of influence in their workplace, their very playfulness adding to their mastery.

Intelligently playful people are highly magnetic to those who work with them.

So I think it's time we consciously developed a sense of play at work. It's not easy in a culture that for some reason admires stressed, busy people, but if we can do it, then we'll not only enhance our own lives, but the lives of those who both live and work with us.

I believe we will end up wealthier too. Not just in money, but in something far more precious.

Well being.

Exactly!  Let the mantra be "judge the deeds and not the demeanour"

When you have the worst day ever, pop home and that kitten will brighten your day if only for a moment. They are always doing crazy stuff or just having a nap in the oddest position.

I think you take your kitty cats playfulness to seriously, to learn a life lesson. They eat, sleep, do stupid stuff and secretly dislike you.

I certainly agree with the author. Play has always been a really an important aspect of our lives. It provided us the much needed physical energy. Moreover it made us happy. While playing we forget everything, we just concentrate on the game. Nowadays the world has become so mechanical that nobody has time to play. In fact we do not even allow our children to play pointing out that they are wasting their time. I found this blog really thought provoking.

" Most artists I believe are very connected to their inner kitten and child".
That child like state is what drives creativity or picks up on the universe creative energy. The adults in us are too busy worrying about that parking ticket and remembering bin night!

Yes i agree. Whenever i have worked in a company that played, the financial results were excellent, morale was higher, and employee retention was up as well. Clearly, being child like is one of the most powerful achievement strategies that exists.
If only more people understood it.

What if the purpose of life was to have fun?

Enjoyed reading this. Play is essential to enjoying a good day's work and ultimately life. I play educational games with my Yr 5 class, I take time to 'chat' to them about trivial matters, I laugh at their silly antics and tame time out for free play. Learning and playing go hand in hand. I then return home and watch the funniest stand-offs between my two puppies. Making money can be a good thing, but having fun doing it is more important!
